While we are heading along to enjoy the long Easter weekend and our Silent Disco Citywalk initiative is approaching its first big milestone, we are here to say that last Saturday was a blast. Thanks to the Panuku Development funding we launched our 5th walking route and organised a FREE community event – Silent Disco Citywalk Panmure Edition last Saturday 13 April 2019.

As a result the event brought, united and interconnected 40 awesome humans from all parts of Auckland. With the help of the personalised audio programme, Silent Disco entertainment provided by Audio Vault we immersed locals into the new environment they get used to call home, turned the mundane reality into something festive, colourful and extraordinary. The rest of the group got introduced to the Panmure life, its historical and public spaces with the help of the Silent Disco Citywalk concept which is by the way a very entertaining and fun way to get to know the new area, trust us 😉

Before any fruits of community work can be collected and the experience shared with a group, we spent a lot of time planning the event and testing the route. We had to work through the certain challenges which size and scale you could only estimate while working on the the project like this as an insider. The main challenge was contained in covering all the public areas, community hubs and historical places on our route by also making sure that the walk is short and sweet, accessible and pleasant for the general public and all levels of fitness.

Moliere once said “the greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.” And it is true. To meet those requirements and visit all exciting places around Panmure, instead of having only one route, we decided to design TWO routes and give our audience to choose the route they would like to explore.

There is an urban upbeat walking route that takes the group around the Panmure town centre, its community hub, introduce them to local shops and cafes. The symbol of that walk is the Cup of Coffee.

The second route is calm and slow with a few activations on the go, while the main focus remains on the mindful practices  around the Panmure Basin. The symbol of that walk is the Lotus flower.

Both routes start at the Panmure Train Station and finish at the Stone Cottage. “Choice” became the theme of the event with its iconic symbol – the golden coin that everyone received at the beginning of the walk.

Now imagine yourself in the audience, what route would you choose? Urban and active OR mindful and slow? Red pill or Blue pill?

Making choices can be hard and stressful at times. To simplify the decision making process you could whether follow the instinct and trust the destiny OR flip the golden coin and see what the outcome would be. This way or another our guests made the choice that allowed them to explore various parts of Panmure and engage in a completely different programme during the same event.

I liked to explore Panmure in that way because we got to meet locals from businesses to graffiti artists (and their cave). I liked because my lovely friend came along and went crazy together! Hope this event will also help local businesses to shine and feel a part of us as a community. Aww it was a best way to explore a slice of Auckland ! – Miho Kodaira

We decided to activate that space by inviting the band from the audience who played the “musical instruments” that happened to be surrounded objects in the hub.

Enjoyed the minutes of silence at the Panmure Basin along with our mindful activities such as colouring the mandala drawn by Auckland-based Mandala Artist Kookai or making an origami crane.

And finally we reached the Stone Cottage (Panmure Historical Society) where Terri greeted us with the homemade lemonade that was the best wellness refreshment that we all could ask for. We drew some prizes, shared some smiles and hugs before we said “good-bye” to our Citywalkers.

Silent Disco Citywalk hits Auckland streets, hidden corners, parks, car parks, exciting public spaces and city objects. It is an energetic outdoor multi-sensory experience that gives a new perspective on the city. The walking adventure transform the city into the dance floor, strangers into the performers, so you feel more connected to the space and community. The special vibe is created thanks to headphones and pre-recorded entertainment programme that everyone hears at the same time, the walk unites diverse people within a group, encourages to play games, explore new destinations, learn how to be free and let go of social judgement and break free while dancing, laughing, smiling and sharing the good vibes.

We offer various personalised packages that are suitable for the team-building, wedding, birthday celebration.

The sense of Unity was amazing and it feels like we always walk away like family rather than strangers. I have to admit that the best part of it was actually learning NEW areas and facts about the region, as someone who has not lived out west for long it was a fun and exciting way to explore my new community. – Destinee Robinson
