Flashmob Concept

Imagine yourself walking down the Queen Street in Auckland and noticing a fun group of young people in the disco costumes. Girls are wandering in high-waisted jeans and colourful tops, vintage dresses with striking eye shadows and big smiles. Boys wearing colourful shirts, wide-legged trousers, tennis headband, low-top sneakers and winking behind the aviator sunglasses. One of them holds the disco ball. While another carries an old-school stereo. Girls start to giggle and hum a familiar song. What are they up to? Are they a music band?

They put down the stereo, set up speakers, put the hat down on the ground, grab a microphone or two and start to sing a song. Does it sound like a familiar disco tune? We don’t know…Maybe for someone. Someone like a gentleman in a raincoat that passes the band by turns around and comes to watch what has been happening. He starts to shake, shake, shake his booty to that familiar tune. He can’t resist the passion of dance that takes him all over. He takes off the coat and joins the band movement, showing us a few dance moves and letting the crowd repeat after him. We see a lady in a flash dress approaching us and grabbing a hat from the ground and starting her dance routine. Then there is a couple of lovers eating ice-cream start to lip syng into their ice-creams and having fun. They eventually join the movement. A young loud group of people passes by and challenges the band to sing something else. They start a battle. Dance battle. The music changes and we hear a famous disco tune – “Staying Alive.”

People are melting into each other with the help of music. It doesn’t seem like not a dance battle anymore. More and more people wearing disco costumes coming forward and join a disco crowd. Young and old. Busy and carefree. Joyful and sad. We all come together to dance and spread the joy! The festive mood is on and dancers, performers jumping into the action from various corners of the street and we dance, dance, dance! Our singing group sings along, random people join the dance.

As the music gently turns down, one by one they all start to share hugs with each other and disappear…they walk away looking at their watch, realising they are running late…or they meet their friend on the street. Each of them has its own reason to walk away…but there was only one reason that brought them together – love to music & dance. We watch the dancing crowd disappear until the only people who are in the middle of attention are our disco band that also finishes up their singing…They chew the gum, share laughs and smiles… They start to pack down. Maybe even bow to the audience. It’s time to go…

Hi. We “spoke” briefly on Facebook. As I said my husband and I do blues/Latin and, though not professional, have done lots of dance displays (just did one at Pasifika with a bluesy/Hawaiian themed dance). I also do Hawaiian hula and have done bellydance in the past, so am a passionate dancer. We’d love to be part of this. We also run a talent agency and can put the word out to talent who are dancers to see who would like to be part of this, perhaps singers too. You can email us on white.p@xtra.co.nz or phone 0272673234. Our agency webstie is http://www.icarustalent.com.

    • Yana Kirakovskaya

Dear Petra, all sounds fantastic. We loooove your enthusiasm & can’t wait to meet you both in person sometime next week. Yay! Yay! Yay for spreading info via your agency, you just the right fit for what we are doing and I can’t ask for more…;)) Will send you the email with all details and yes, please to spreading the word around your community! As for briefings will Tue or Wed night (4 or 5 April) next week will work the best for you??? will be in touch via phone by the end of this week! much aroha and dancing vibes to youuu!

      • Petra Gloyn

Tuesday night would suit us best I think at this stage. Aloha nui (much love in Hawaiian)
