Midweek Treats - Varvar Art, Getaway by RHCP, WE'AR clothing, MAKE documentary and much more

Words and post by Yana Papaya

Our new Midweek Treats inspirational column is a monthly feature that celebrates cool passionate people and things, ideas, projects that they generate and live by. Each person, brand or idea reflect one of the senses that we can be inspired by – vision, sound, flavour, touch, free-spirit and intuition.

Feel free to submit your idea, product or hobby you are passionate about to papayastories@gmail.com to be considered for a new feature next month and don’t forget to let us know what inspires you.

VISION

To illustrate the visionary side of things we introduce you to a very detailed, peculiar and interesting world of Varvar2076 –  a Russian-born artist who found his home in New Zealand. His artist’s name combines both – letters and numbers and I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Because Vladimir expresses himself through his main driving passions – he works as an architect which can refer to a numeric part of artist’s nickname, while his imaginative mind takes over his free time and results in some interesting sketches of abstract forms, creatures and nature, some of them are shown below.

“I have two hearts. One stands for an Architecture while the second one goes with an Art.

I started to draw when I was 6 years old. My big brother went to an art school, so my parents decided that I also should go there. So I had been studying at the Art School for 6 years, 3 years at the St.Petersburg Art School and another 6 years at the St.Petersburg University of Architecture.

And then somehow after that experience I lived 10 years without drawing, sketching and painting…And then I got myself an iPad and stylus. And so I got back into it.

First I was captivated by an idea of various spaceships I drew for friends who were also into the same computer games that I was playing too.

And after that I started experimenting – drawing sci-fi masks, faces, symmetrical shapes. I used to draw a lot in the underground back home in St.Petersburg. And those drawings capture lots of emotions.

And then my family moved to New Zealand. We faced certain challenges when I was here and the rest of went back to Russia. We were  apart for a year and a half. Regular flights from one place to another, one land to another also changed me. So did the art style.  So a new era with mixed emotions kicked off. All of those events, occurrences, fantasies, nightmares and emotional sufferings overwhelmed me incredibly.

My latest drawing style captures landscapes in the style of KORU, a series of Black Ice, Carbon series and Little Robots series.”

SOUND

“Getaway” by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

It’s a comeback of the year, a music release from a legendary band that we all have been waiting for a long time. Red Hot Chili Peppers just rocked the world of millions by bringing a perfect set of songs for any possible getaway in your life – whether you about to explore an isolated beach with your loved one or going on a solo journey after leaving a certain place or relationship. Like any other getaway it leads to a variety of the emotions and mix of feelings – it’s exciting to take off to do or be somewhere new and at the same time it’s sad to leave some things behind. The new RHCP album will lay down a perfect soundtrack for this or that “moving on” activity. I won’t get into a detail of describing the role co-creators of the album such as Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton and longtime Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich who definitely added more yummy ingredients into the music sauce of the album so it becomes that sort of “red hot chili” we’re all loving so much.

I would like to underline the role and amazingness of Red Hot Chili Peppers as a band, as an inspirational team, as a bunch of groovy lads who managed to age gracefully but somehow didn’t lose a talent to rock’n’roll, be playful, fun and crazy, who let the funk embrace the beat. I think what we can definitely learn from RHCP and their new album is the art of getting older. I want to emphasize as it’s not about growing older. We are getting older when we are growing deeper in yourself and gain a significant level of self-awareness that would drive our decisions and actions. And being fully self-aware also means accepting both full of contradictory colours of your personality as Anthony Kiedis sings: “You don’t know my mind. You don’t know my kind. Dark necessities are part of my desire.” Dark and bright, long black and flat white, days and nights co-exist peacefully in outer and inner Universe.

Grow deeper, play safe and let your soul explore the intense beauty that hides in some dark parts of your soul. “Getaway” will make you feel Red as some tunes may accompany you when you have a crush on someone – you are blushing and waiting to be kissed. Those sort of r(e)ad moments. The new album will make you feel Hot simply because of music genuineness who brought their talents into this latest work. The new album will make you feel like a chili pepper – learn lyrics and the chords, smash Flea’s guitar or play hard the drums and feel like you just one of them.

TOUCH + FREE SPIRIT

Spring is already here in the southern hemisphere and it’s time to get inspired. How do you get yourself ready for a new warm season? Gym? massages? healthy eating and well-being programmes? What is your spring jam…?

One of my favourite rituals of the season change is to refresh my wardrobe – getting rid of long and woolen sweaters, forgetting about wearing multiple layers, swapping long skirts to a shorter and more flirty options, so the wind has power to play along with the skirt and lift it up in unpredictable moments for an everyone’s surprise. Thinking about spring makes me dream about a new summer outfit that I would to wear on a hot summer day in the city or somewhere nice on the beach. An outfit that symbolises the true sense of freedom and beauty. A dress, a beautifully designed jumpsuit, a combo of favourite pants with a delicate silky light top… What is your dream look that makes you feel and look good?

WE’AR clothes are made on Bali that each of us regularly visits – whether we are going for a surf trip or yoga retreat, catching up with the sun, stunning beaches and the ocean; enjoying endless summer parties or celebrating birthday, wedding or any other happy occasion with our loved ones. We all love Bali. So WE’AR took one step further in this love-giving relationship. The company provides a hard-working island community with a stable and fair income, interesting and creative work, while using only organic clothing materials and fabrics. A new collection is made of usual high quality organic cottons, sit Lenzing certified tencel, modal and viscose. Some of the garments are made of a new bamboo twill which is a luxury fabric that falls and breathes like silk being totally vegan and earth friendly.

Romantic vibes, flowing energy and simple beauty that how I see a new collection called Poniente. It breathes with lightness, calls to dry lands of languid layers and bleached out colour Rose Quartz and mineral tones.

Poniente yields the soft, new artisanal print Featherbone in low contrast tonal colours. It’s a symbol of free spirit. You feel confident, elegant, empowered and weightless. WE’AR transforms oneself and gives wings, so every woman feels like this spring/summer she is about to take off and fly towards a new dream. And who knows who will be holding your hand on this flight to the Moon and back…

FLAVOUR

Talking about trips to the Moon, what can be better than those trips? Perhaps regular trips to the Moon and back accompanied with some Wine, Cheese & Astronomy date nights that at the Observatory.

But how about organising a romantic astronomy night at your own place? We have prepared all right ingredients for you. If you are in DYI sort of things, be like one of the coolest dad and create a starry ceiling yourself or get those might-be-cheesy-but-always-a-good-alternative glowing stars and pin them to your ceiling. Get yourself a set of stylish toys…toys for boys to impress the lady. Weeeeeeell, I am talking about telescopes here.

And also please don’t forget about an important unbreakable rule that applies to both – ladies and gentlemen – a path to a man’s (woman’s hypothetically too) lies through its tummy. Feed your loved one with the best cheeses ever. Winning  75 medals and lucky 13 trophies the dairy made by Over the Moon will serve this mission at its best satisfying any possible craving for cheese and also keeping up with a theme of your date which is a Win-Win. Some might amuse with a set with rare books and limited editions while you can surprise with a special collection of cheeses…some names of cheese sorts can be surprise by itself. INTUITION

A big shout out to all creatives out there!…

An interesting and maybe life-defining question for you – what drives you when you are creating? Does the passion come first followed by a desire to be socially demanded and recognised? Or is it initially ego-driven and your creativity fuels up with an idea of enormous success..?

Maybe it’s time to look inside, reflect and move forward no matter how much success or failure you experienced on the way…As for me I don’t believe that failure exists when you are already moving along your path to unleash your calling. A failure exists when the fear takes over, when the fear is the only dimension of your living…When instead of acting and doing something, you sit still and do NOTHING but complaining about the world and feeling self-pity. So based on this vision, just putting a kind reminder to myself as well as to all people out there. No matter what the outcome of the progress is – you got the money for you project or not, you got a large number of subscribers or not – you haven’t failed at all as you are MAKING things happen!

A fantastic, beautiful directed and intelligently filmed documentary called MAKE is a start of a big conversation for us to find out what lies at the core of our creative process. Different professionals, industries and stories have been shared in this film. This documentary emphasized a role of storytelling in our lives, a significance of being able to have an open and honest conversation with others and more importantly with ourselves on a topic of creativity.

Watch MAKE on Vimeo produced by talented team at Musicbed to learn the art of storytelling. Watch it and participate in the ongoing conversation by simply realising where you are at in your journey and keep your good work up! Peace.
